For this discussion assignment, you will address some of the components of Sean Blanda’s essay “The ‘Other Side’ Is Not Dumb.” In your response, make an argument using reliable evidence and reasoned argument. You do not need to cite from any sources other than Blanda, though you may if you wish.
Your response (the initial post) should be 3-4 developed paragraphs, and should include occasional in-text citations from Blanda’s essay in MLA style; it should additionally contain a works cited section at the bottom of your post. Because discussion posts are less formal than essay assignments, there is no need to double space your writing. What I am looking for is your ability to write cogently about the topic and support your view with reliable evidence using MLA in-text citations and an MLA works cited list at the bottom of your post.
Next: reply to 2 students in 1-2 developed paragraphs per student, meaningfully commenting on their analysis and offering additional useful information to consider. Feel free to disagree with your peers (because this is often how we learn)—but do so respectfully.
Prompt
Blanda cites the “false-consensus bias” early in his paper, which, he argues, often results in being “blindsided by the opinions of our friends” or others, leading us to conclude that the “other side” of a view is “dumb” and should be mocked (380-381). He argues that what we have before us in the U.S. “is not a ‘political correctness’ issue” but a “fundamental rejection of the possibility to consider that the people who don’t feel the same way [we] do might be right,” and to see the other side as a “cardboard cutout” rather than “complicated individual human beings” (382-383). What solution does Blanda offer to counter such a problem? How does this solution connect to the Perspectives lessons you have been learning? Finally, what do you think you can do personally to bring about the solution he envisions? (Be sure to answer all questions.)
Note: for your works cited entry, you will use the “selection from an anthology” category in MLA style since your text They Say/I Say is considered an anthology, which is a collection of works by many writers within one publication.
