Questions:
In the video, the narrator discusses the welfare reform that occurred in the 1990s. The reformed welfare system’s primary objective was to decrease the number of people receiving welfare services, which it continues to do, however it does not decrease the number of people living in poverty. This is a major criticism of the reform. What do you think about this distinction (lowering the number of people receiving welfare but not lowering to number of people living in poverty)? Do you think that it is the government’s responsibility to help people experiencing poverty? Explain you answers. After the Great Depression, the level of government involvement changed from “if the government should help” to “how the government should help”. Political parties disagree on the how much the government should help with various human service issues, including poverty, mental health, homelessness, substance abuse, etc.. How much involvement do you think the government should have when it comes to these issues? Should there be more funding for programs that support reducing these issues? Should there be less? Explain your answers. How have social policies, or lack there of, affected you? Can you think of ways that you have seen a lack of social services effect your community, city, state and country? Explain your answers.
